Week In Review: 4 July 2021 - 10 July 2021

One of the biggest developments this week was Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s cabinet reshuffling. The new cabinet has been noted to be the youngest cabinet with several ministers from the OBC categories as well as more women ministers than the previous cabinet. However, the reshuffle saw the resignation of several ministers such as Dr. Harsh Vardhan. The reshuffle has received mixed responses leaving it up to the time to determine how effective this reshuffle will be.

As the Olympics approach, several controversies come to light. One major controversy was athlete Sha’Carri Richardson being suspended on the grounds of consuming cannabis. Her suspension was met with a lot of outrage and reignited the debate over cannabis use with many deeming her suspension as unfair and unjust.

The Tokyo Olympics is just around the corner. Keeping this in mind, the Japanese Prime Minister, YoshihdeSuga, has announced a state of emergency in the capital. This measure has been taken because of the rising COVID-19 cases in Tokyo, and due to the Tokyo Olympics opening which is just two weeks away. The prime minister said that the emergency was required to “prevent the resurgence of the future spread on cases across the country.” The emergency will be in effect from Monday until 22nd of August. This also implies that the opening ceremony on 23rd July, and the running through 8th August will be taking place under strict emergency measures only. Thomas Bach, the IOC President, arrived in the capital on Thursday. He avoided cameras at the airport, and went to the IOC’s games headquarters. He has to reportedly self-isolate for a duration of 3 days. The local organizers as well as the IOC are trying to conduct the Olympics despite media and Japanese public’s opposition. The emergency’s main objective would to keep Olympic-related festivities in check. The residents of Tokyo most likely would be asked to stay at home, and enjoy the games on TV.
